Here are the steps to get plugged into a project. Students outside of Spectrum can work remotely (per Inta Mednis, Research Admin at Spectrum Health). You can go through the research onboarding process before being assigned a study.

All students involved in research must join this MSU Ortho Discord community: https://discord.gg/z3CqN7aZny

  1. Purpose for discord: Review announcements, stay connected with the MSU ortho community, and have a single point of contact for medical students

    1. Why Discord? It is Zoom, email, slack, and a community-building platform mixed into one.
  2. Read our MSU Ortho Research Team Mission Statement:

  3. Please fill out the All Available Med Students - Main Database if you are available to help out with a project, please only do this if you are willing to commit to 1-2 years of research effort. Also, please keep your submitted information up to date for resident and attending reference:

    1. After you filled out your info, please email the MSU Research Leader, @Alex Case and the Ortho Resident and Med Student Research Leads: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. You will be assigned to a project based on order of submission.
  4. Check the “Ongoing Research Projects” list to see what is available, in your email to @Alex Case, you can bring up your preferences:

    1. MSU Ortho Research Database - Med Student View
  5. Once you are apart of a research project, you are responsible for emailing the whole project team with updates on the first Monday of the month, following this template for each project you are involved in, on your emails please CC @Alex Case and the Ortho Resident and Med Student Research Leads: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].

Challenges: Ensuring that no other case reports have covered this specific injury, as we want our publication to be unique Next Steps: Finding a team leader, working with neurosurgery resident on lit review, finding a great template study. Specific Asks/Needs: Need the team to keep an eye out for good papers, need the resident team members to get patient permission to publish their case, and need the whole team to be patient with response times in the next three weeks because I will be swamped call.
